Run both Safari 2 and Safari 3 Beta

As a web developer by profession I’m always in need of an incredible array of browsers to test with. The problem with many updated browser versions is that they overwrite the previous incarnation.

Such was the case with the new Apple Safari 3 Beta browser released at WWDC 2007 this Monday. Looking around the Internet tonight, I found a walk-through that allows you to keep Safari 2 and Safari 3 Beta on the same machine.

The 60 second version of the walk-through goes like this: make a copy of Safari 2, rename it, and then install Safari 3 Beta. Presto. Two Versions.

Update: I’ve left this post here for posterity, but you shouldn’t rely on Safari2 rendering pages accurately as a Safari2 browser if you also have Safari3 installed. I’ve noticed that Safari3 changes a bunch of the Safari frameworks. Bummer.
